5 Simple and Natural DIY Home Spa Treatments

There is a certain sense of enjoyment and rejuvenation that can only occur while treating yourself to a spa day from your own home, to your own music, with treatments you made yourself with love, from items in your own kitchen. Self induced stress relief is often the most satisfying. Enough said, you deserve this, let’s go.

First, set the mood. You’re going to want to throw on some music that relaxes you without putting you to sleep. Songs with a sweet balance of mellow yet vibey. Think Little Dragon, Khruangbin, Ry X, Azawade, etc… and feel free to light a few relaxing scented candles, essential oil diffuser or incense. Be creative - this is your very own spa experience. It will be as good as you make it.

Next, I recommend you put on a robe or something soft and loungey. This silky black kimono is our personal favourite for our beloved home spa days.

Starting from your head to your toes..

AVOCADO HONEY HAIR MASK

Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon honey

Prep Time: 5 minutes  Treatment Time: 30 minutes

Benefits: Avocado is rich in omega-3’s and essential amino acids that coat your hair while helping it to retain texture, it’s also smoothing and rejuvenating to dry/damaged hair. The vitamin E in olive oil will add moisturize and naturally reduce scalp irritation and dandruff. Quick tip: (if your hair is more dry, thick, or curly, you can add a little extra olive oil, and if your hair is more on the oily side, use a little less.) Honey has been used as a natural beauty aid for thousands of years around the world. It’s a bonding agent, helping to reduce breakage while softening your hair and adding shine. Raw organic honey is the most ideal, or the closest to natural you can find for optimal results.

Remove the skin and pit of your avocado and mash or blend until smooth, then mix in the olive oil and honey. Heat lightly in a small pot on the stove so it is warm but not too hot.

Apply your warm delicious hair mask from the roots to the tips of your hair, massaging it gently into your scalp and throughout. Cover with a shower cap and relax for 30 minutes...then wash with a natural or sulfate free shampoo. (You want to retain the moisture and healing properties of the mask, stripping your hair with a chemical shampoo will contradict your precious remedy.)

BROWN SUGAR LIP SCRUB

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon

Prep Time: 5 minutes  Treatment Time: 5 minutes

Benefits: Lips typically get a lot of attention in the moisturization department, but exfoliation is actually the key to having soft, luscious lips. There are a plethora of lip scrub recipes out there but this is our personal favourite. Brown sugar is a natural exfoliant and much more gentle than some of nature’s other exfoliants, like salt. Coconut oil contains antioxidants and naturally protects from the sun and cinnamon creates a warming “plumping” sensation and repairs damaged tissues.

Mix the sugar, cinnamon and coconut oil together until you reach your ideal consistency… feel free to play with the amount of oil to get a more silky scrub vs. a more exfoliating blend depending on the dryness of your lips. Apply the scrub with your finger, rubbing it in using small circular motions for 2-3 minutes. Rinse with warm water and add a lip balm. Repeat a few times per week as you wish.  Home-made lip balms are also super simple to make.

TURMERIC HONEY FACE MASK

Ingredients: 1.5 teaspoons of ground turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of raw organic honey, 1 tablespoon of unsweetened coconut milk, 2 slices of cucumber.

Prep Time: 5 minutes Treatment Time: 20 minutes

Benefits: Turmeric has been praised throughout history for its anti-inflammatory and beautifying properties and is referred to by many as a “secret beauty weapon”. Its antioxidants are proven to slow down cell damage, reduce pigmentation evening out skin tones and diminishing wrinkles. Combined with healing honey and skin-soothing coconut milk, this face mask is ideal for tightening and brightening your skin.

Blend the turmeric, honey and coconut milk combination into a thin, creamy paste. Adjust the coconut milk quantity to get the consistency that feels best to you. Since turmeric can stain the skin, apply a thin layer and avoid your neck where skin is thinner. If it does stain the skin - don’t worry, it will wash off with a baking soda and water paste. Before application wash your face to remove any makeup or dirt, and apply the mask evenly. Place the cucumber slices over your eyes and relax for 10/20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

COFFEE BODY SCRUB

Ingredients: 1 cup of non-instant coffee grounds, ½ cup of olive oil.

Prep Time: 2 minutes Treatment Time: 10 minutes.

Benefits: Once you start saving your coffee grounds in the fridge to use as a body or face scrub, you will start to experience that good old 2 for 1 effect. More bang for your buck. Coffee is a natural exfoliant, and its caffeine content helps to tighten the skin and improve blood flow, reducing cellulite. Olive oil is packed with vitamins, and is naturally antibacterial and moisturizing, preventing signs of aging. Yes, this is quite the dynamic duo.

Pour your coffee grounds into a bowl and stir in the olive oil until all of the coffee is saturated. If it seems too dry, continue adding olive oil until the consistency is right for you. Yes, that is all. It’s that easy…! Apply the scrub gently and slowly in a circular motion starting with your feet all the way up your body. The face is optional but highly recommended if you didn’t try out the turmeric mask.

CHAMOMILE FOOT BATH

Ingredients: Chamomile loose tea. (or remove from the tea bag) Warm water,  Epsom Salt, Coconut Oil and essential oil of choice.

Prep Time: 5 minutes, Treatment Time: 30/60 minutes.

Benefits: Let’s be real. Soaking our feet is underrated and for the amount of time we spend on our precious hooves throughout the average day,  we are more than deserving of a little relaxing foot soak from time to time. Or every night….your call.

Almost as easy as the coffee scrub, you literally just heat up some water in a tub or large bowl, add the dried chamomile flowers, a splash of coconut oil and essential oil drops and sprinkle in your desired amount of epsom salt. Gently scrub and massage your feet with the salt, and enjoy for as long as your heart desires.
